Joseph P. Swain, Ph.D.

Joseph P. Swain joined Tapestry as Musical Director in 1992. An associate professor of music at Colgate University, he received his A.B. in music and medieval studies from Dartmouth College and his A.M. in musicology and Ph.D. in music from Harvard University.

His performance experience, extensive research, and publications reveal a diverse musical talent and interest, ranging from chant to the American musical theater. One of his books, 'The Broadway Musical: a Critical Survey" (1991), received the Deems Taylor Award for excellence in writing about music from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). A second publication, Musical Languages, was released in 1997. A revised and expanded edition of The Broadway Musical: a Critical Survey, was released in 2002, as was Harmonic Rhythm (Oxford). Among articles he has written for music publications are essays on critical theory, studies of modern Catholic Church music, and works on musical perception. He has played viola with the Colgate Concert Orchestra and the Colgate Chamber Music Society, and has also arranged music for Tapestry's singers and recorder quartet.
